Work crew cuts gas line

Work crews cutting through a sidewalk at the 600 block of MacArthur Avenue in San Mateo ended up accidentally cutting a natural gas line to a house.

The accident was reported about 1:30 p.m. and the leak was stopped by 3 p.m., said Jeff Barile, an acting San Mateo Fire Department battalion chief. Several fire engines and a truck responded to the scene. About an hour later only one engine remained, to make sure the gas did not ignite.

"With natural gas, it is very volatile," Barile said.

Nobody was injured and no one had to be evacuated, Barile said. The street is relatively small, so the rupture did not cause any major traffic problems.
