Legion tourney on tap today

Some of the area's best 17-and-under American Legion baseball teams will open play in the Area 2 Tournament today at McKelvey Park in Mountain View.

Eight teams will compete in the double-elimination event for a spot in the state tournament in Yountville. The Area 2 event continues every day through at least Wednesday, when a championship game will be played with the potential for a second title game on Thursday.

Today's games begin at 9 a.m. when Half Moon Bay takes on Berkeley. Burlingame meets Deer Valley at noon, followed by Palo Alto vs. Clayton Valley at 4. The night feature two Peninsula teams: San Mateo faces host Los Altos at 7 p.m.

Cost will be $4 for adults, $2 for kids under 13. Seniors and veterans can purchase a tournament pass for $20. A family pass will sell for $30 and a tournament pass will go for for $25.

There will be a snack bar and restrooms will be available.



Hansen gets honor for grades, athletics

Menlo Park's Kelly Hansen, a rising senior at the University of San Diego, was named a Scholar Athlete by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association for the second time.

She held 3.58 GPA while majoring in both communications and sociology. She was the bow for the school's varsity four at the national championships.



Golfers can support Oaks baseball club

The fifth annual Tony Makjavich Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Sept. 6 at Sunol Valley Golf Club in Sunol. The cost of $150 includes greens fees, a cart, prizes, lunch and dinner. This event is a fundraiser for the Palo Alto Oaks semipro baseball team. All proceeds go toward funding the team. Sponsors also are needed. The cost to sponsor a hole is $150.
