Azevedo enjoys new facility

Former Stanford water polo star part of U.S. team at Olympics

The U.S. Olympic Team will be training at a sparkling new training center at Beijing Normal University during the Olympics. The recreation center includes a 50-meter pool, three gymnasiums, indoor batting cages for baseball, a boxing ring, a plush weightroom, a wrestling room equipped with a sauna, strips for fencing and modern pentathlon, volleyball courts, pingpong tables, mats for martial arts - and a perfectly manicured soccer field.

"This is unbelievable, beautiful - honestly," said Tony Azevedo, a Stanford grad and captain of the men's water polo team, as he strained under leg and chest exercises Wednesday in the university's weightroom. "I honestly didn't expect anything like this. It's just amazing."

Eight years ago in Sydney, the United States Olympic Committee rented a warehouse and equipped it sparsely with a few barbells, dumbbells and video equipment.

Kim out of Western Amateur

Stanford's Sihwan Kim advanced to the quarterfinals of the 106th Western Amateur at the Point O' Woods Golf and Country Club in Benton Harbor, Mich., on Saturday, but his run at the prestigious tournament came to an end when he lost to Victor Dubuisson of France 3-1.

Earlier in the day, Kim defeated USC's Rory Hie 5-4 to advance to the quarterfinal match.

Dubuisson advanced to today's semifinals, where he will meet UCLA's Erik Flores. Conrad Shindler, who plays at Texas A&M, will meet Danny Lee of New Zealand in the other semifinal.

Trainer in top 10 at Jr. Amateur

Palo Alto's Martin Trainer shot rounds of 74 and 70 at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championships near Birmingham, Ala., last weekend.

The Gunn High School golfer finished with a 144 total, five shots behind winner Jorge Fernandez Valdes of Argentina. Trainer beat all but nine golfers in the large field of some of the world's best young golfers.

Dash Lindsell of Burlingame shot 69 and 81 for a 150 total.
